Description
Yonge Street is one of the most well-known and historic streets in Toronto, Canada. It is also one of the longest streets in the world, stretching over 1,896 kilometers from the shores of Lake Ontario in Toronto to Rainy River on the border with the United States.
In Toronto, Yonge Street runs through the heart of the city's downtown core, beginning at the edge of Lake Ontario and stretching north for approximately 56 kilometers, ending in the community of Holland Landing in the Town of East Gwillimbury. Along the way, it passes through some of Toronto's most iconic neighborhoods, including the Financial District, the Entertainment District, and the upscale shopping district of Yorkville.
Yonge Street has played an important role in the history and development of Toronto. It was originally a First Nations trading route, and was later used by European settlers as a transportation corridor between Lake Ontario and Lake Simcoe. In the 19th century, it became a commercial hub and the site of many of Toronto's most important cultural institutions, including Massey Hall and the Toronto Eaton Centre.
Today, Yonge Street remains a major thoroughfare in Toronto, with a mix of commercial, residential, and cultural establishments lining its length. It is also home to several notable landmarks, including the Yonge-Dundas Square, the Hockey Hall of Fame, and the St. Lawrence Market.
